Rights Respecting and Our Catholic Mission

At Sacred Heart, our commitment to the Rights Respecting Schools Award flows naturally from our Catholic ethos and our Gospel values. We see the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) not as an addition to our faith, but as a practical framework for living out our mission every day as the family of God.

Living Our Catholic Mission "With joyful hearts we love, learn and praise as the family of God"

"With joyful hearts we love..."

Jesus taught us to love one another as He loved us (John 13:34). We love our pupils by recognizing that every child is created in the image and likeness of God with inherent dignity. We honor their rights to be safe (Article 19), cared for, and treated with love and kindness.

"...learn..."

We believe education is a sacred journey that enables every child to flourish and fulfill their God-given potential. Grounded in Article 28 (Right to education) and Article 29 (Goals of education), we foster learning environments where children develop their talents and respect human rights, diversity, and the environment.

"...and praise..."

We express our gratitude and praise to God through collective worship, prayer, and by celebrating the dignity and gifts of every individual. Our rights-respecting environment encourages freedom of thought, conscience, and religion (Article 14), enabling our children to pray and praise with open, joyful hearts.

"...as the family of God."

As members of God's family, we belong to a global community. Children learn that rights belong to all children everywhere, without discrimination (Article 2). We build a compassionate, inclusive school family where everyone's voice is heard (Article 12) and valued.

Bridging Children's Rights and Catholic Social Teaching (CST)

The principles of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) guide us in building a more just, loving world. The UNCRC rights closely align with CST, demonstrating how our faith and rights work hand-in-hand:

  • Human Dignity: CST teaches that every human life is sacred. This directly aligns with the fundamental principle of the UNCRC that rights are inherent, universal, and belong to every child simply because they exist.

  • Subsidiarity & Participation: CST emphasizes that people must have a say in decisions that affect their lives. This mirrors Article 12 of the UNCRC, which upholds every child's right to express their views freely and have their opinions taken seriously.

  • Preferential Option for the Poor & Vulnerable: Gospel teaching calls us to put the needs of the vulnerable first. Through our advocacy for rights (Strand C), pupils learn to stand up for children whose rights are neglected, supporting local food banks, charities, and global campaigns like UNICEF's OutRight.

  • Stewardship of Creation (Care for Our Common Home): Inspired by Pope Francis' Laudato Si', our pupils embrace their role as stewards of God's creation, linking environmental action with the right to clean water, food, and a safe environment (Article 24).

  • Solidarity & Common Good: We are all responsible for one another. Learning about global rights empowers our children to recognize their connection to the global human family and act as peacemakers and justice-seekers.
